The Val Gelon and the Pays d'Allevard will amaze you by their richness and diversity. Green meadows, huge forests, mountain chalets and mountain lakes: on the numerous marked out paths you will encounter the best of the region. The diversity and beauty of the landscape will please those who love long hikes as well as those who prefer family walks. The region comprises 400 kilometers of paths with directions, delighting walkers and hikers.
The Val Gelon:
The Val Gelon comprises two valleys : the oil valley (Vallée des Huiles), which leads towards the Maurienne region, and the Gelon valley (Vallée du Gelon), named after the torrent flowing from the Huile valley into the Arc River at the Arc/Isère confluence, after having crossed a large and green valley The valley used to be under Roman influence, the remains on the hiking paths attest to this. It also has castles and towers dating from the Middle Ages. The Val Gelon is also a group of 14 rural villages, a medium altitude mountain area, ideal for every type of tourism, with loads of winter and summer outdoor activities.
The Pays d’Allevard:
Situated North of the Belledonne chain, the canton of Allevard comprises 6 cities: Allevard Les Bains, St Pierre d'Allevard, Pinsot, La Ferrière, La Chapelle du Bard and le Moutard. Set where the charm and greenness of the valleys ally to the grandness and whiteness of the 2'900m high Belledonne chain summits, the Pays d’Allevard offers the visitors all the splendor and variety of its sceneries. The whole region was covered by deep forests with bears and wolves and was really poor. The history of the Pays d’Allevard changed with the mining industry, and then with hydrotherapy industry. |
