History

Arvillard separates the Savoy and the Dauphiné regions, that is why from the XIth century on, appears a castle owned by the familly d’Arvillard, who is represented in 1058 by Humbert d'Arvillard, son of Humbert Ier de Domène and the princess Adélaïde de Savoie.

Different members of the family pay tribute to the counts of Savoy: Pierre in 1291, Péronet in 1318, Pierre in 1323, Jacquette and her son Jean in 1330.

In 1341, Arvillard belongs to Humbert de Savoie, illegitimate son of the Count Aymon the Peaceful, as he maries Audise, Péronet’s daughter and the last descendant of the Arvillards.

In 1488, the territory becomes a barony in Françoise’s favour. When Prince Humbert de Savoie’s line of descent extinguishes with Virginie de la Palud’s death – Ennemond Aynard’s widow and heiress by the Chevron-Villette, the barony is sold and indentured to Hector Millet, ambassador for King Henri IV, and in 1678, to Sébastien Millet and his son, M. de la Fléchère. The old fortress isn’t damaged by the revolution.

In 1872, the castle is inhabited by the marquis d'Escard, who by looking for a treasure in there almost went out of his mind. Then, it became a hotel and later, a holiday centre.

In 2001, the castle is in really poor condition and is bought by several individuals who want to renovate it.

A mistake in the land register makes the building the Château d’Escart and enables it to begin a new life.

The village of Arvillard :

In the region of Savoy, Arvillard has always been famous for its forges and little hammers (martinets), for its old castle and for its Saint Hugon Charterhouse, founded in 1172 and which is now a Buddhist meditation centre. The village has always been able to well preserve the rural character of the houses, of the alleys lined with wash houses, of the flowered balconies, and it has been able to protect its environment by constructing new chalets which blend with the surroundings.

The Arvillard forest is treasured and the marked paths enable the walker to admire the high large crowned fir trees and their pine cones up like candles, the spindle-shaped and red-barked spruces and the larches which light shade gives charm to the landscape.
